The Baatz Block Apartments: From Historic Building to New Beginnings

In the heart of downtown Great Falls, a century-old structure is taking on a powerful new purpose. Originally built in 1913 as a 40-room hotel, the historic Baatz Building has been revitalized into something far more than just bricks and mortar — it has become a cornerstone of hope for those experiencing homelessness.

Thanks to a collaborative effort led by NeighborWorks Great Falls and Homeword of Missoula, the Baatz Block has been transformed into 25 permanent supportive housing apartments—the first of their kind in the city. Prior to this project, all homeless services in Great Falls were limited to emergency shelter beds. The need for more stable housing options has never been greater. According to the 2020 Point in Time Homeless Survey, homelessness in Great Falls increased by over 36% from 2019 to 2020, highlighting the urgent demand for long-term solutions.

More Than Housing — A Lifeline

The Baatz Block Apartments will serve 24 households experiencing homelessness or chronic homelessness. Through rental assistance and other subsidies, residents will only pay 30% of their income (if any) toward rent. More importantly, they’ll gain access to essential services designed just for them—medical, dental, and behavioral healthcare, along with practical education like cooking skills and financial literacy—all available right where they live.

“This is a critical step in addressing housing insecurity across Montana,” said Karissa Trujillo, Executive Director at Homeword. “We’re creating stability for people who need it most, while also reducing long-term public costs in healthcare, emergency services, and the criminal justice system.”

A Community Effort, Rooted in History

The renovation of the Baatz Block began in Fall 2023. With careful attention to preserving its historical character—original flooring and storefront windows remain intact—the project is a shining example of adaptive reuse: breathing new life into a once-blighted property while respecting its past.

The redevelopment was made possible in part by a $375,000 investment from NeighborWorks Montana, which helped fund the building’s acquisition and early development costs. The result is not just an affordable housing project, but a symbol of what’s possible when communities come together with a shared vision.

“This building is more than a structure restored—it’s a promise fulfilled,” said Sherrie Arey, Executive Director at NeighborWorks Great Falls. “By transforming a once-neglected space into permanent supportive housing, we are providing dignity, stability, and hope to neighbors who need it most. This project shows what’s possible when we invest in both housing and people.”

Welcome Home

Each resident will be greeted with a welcome basket—filled with essentials like towels, bed linens, cookware, and more—thanks to donations from the community. It’s a small gesture with a big message: you belong here.

Community members are invited to be part of this effort. To donate items or learn more, call NeighborWorks Great Falls at 406-761-5861.

The Baatz Block Apartments represent more than a housing development—they are a tangible step toward a more compassionate, inclusive Great Falls. By preserving a piece of history and reimagining it for today’s needs, this project proves that when we invest in housing, we invest in people.
