About The Montana Homeownership Network

The Montana Homeownership Network (MHN) got its start back in 1998, when Homebuyer education and first-time homebuyers counseling were catching on across the state.  A group of individuals from non-profit, federal and state government agencies and for-profit lenders came together to envision how best to assist first-time homebuyers statewide.  MHN sought to build on the successful relationships among those groups already in place in Neighborhood Housing Services of Great Falls.  The idea was to partner with existing organizations to offer homebuyer education and counseling, rather than try to create new agencies devoted solely to homeownership.

By 2006, MHN had grown to include over 25 non-profit partner organizations, mostly local or multi-county based, that hosted homebuyer education teachers and housing counselors. Neighborhood Housing Services in turn provided providing training for national certification of counselors and teachers. Since 2004, MHN has also provided financial support for homebuyer education and counseling across Montana through 25-30 local non-profit and tribal agencies. MHN requires all teachers and counselors to become nationally certified within a year of starting, and requires the teachers, counselors and conduct of classes and counseling meet the national standards and Code of Ethics for homebuyer counseling established by the National Industry Standards of Homeownership Education and Counseling. In 2008, MHN became an independent, chartered Neighborhood Housing Services agency in its own right to serve the entire state of Montana.
